What is Style?

My definition of style; a distinctive appearance, or personal statement that defines you and no one else. Individuality is the nucleus of style and unfortunately, we have evolved into a nation of walking, breathing, commercial billboards for brands and other labels.  Style has been substituted by trend, and a price tag. A sure fire way to go broke is by following trends. Don’t be suckered in by what’s chic today, because in six months it will be passe. Taking up much needed real estate in your closet, and you will not be able to give these items away once the trend has run its course.

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.” ~ Gianni Versace – Versace F/W 2015
It is not a prerequisite that your pieces have slithered down the fashion catwalks of London or New York, nor must they cost a vulgar amount of money to become an addition to your collection, unless they are truly your style.
“Fashions fade, style is eternal.” ~ Yves Saint Laurent – 2014 / 2015 Saint Laurent Fall Collection
The old steadfast fashion rules are no longer in effect; 1. wear no white after Labor Day (I still adhere to this one), 2. Don’t mix silver and gold, 3. Handbag and shoes must match (still a bit of a stickler on this one)  4. Don’t mix black and brown,  5. Never wear stockings / pantyhose, or leotards with open toed shoes (I haven’t worn pantyhose in years), 6. The colors blue and green; never the twain shall meet, 7. First day of fall your summer wardrobe must be put away (now this one I kinda still follow; a. because I need the closet space, b. I don’t pack them all away, because I’m menopausal and must wear sleeveless or short sleeve tops at the office or die of spontaneous combustion). As you can tell I’m not willing to sacrifice personal comfort to abide by rules made by someone other than me, which is my personal style.

“Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and, of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys they’d just walk around naked at all times.” ~ Betsey Johnson

In other words when developing your own style, let your conscience, comfort, personal likes, and dislikes dictate how to proceed. Let not what’s in or trendy be the compass in what direction you will follow when it comes to what makes you feel confident in your appearance. Not only in fashion, but from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. Our appearance and physical well being are the only things we have in life that we can truly control, and you need not be timid about what makes you feel good.
